FTPS server solutions are commonly used by organizations for sharing documents, distributing software updates, creating offsite backups, and hosting multimedia content securely. This includes data such as healthcare records or card payment data. FTPS servers make sure that such data stays out of unathorized hands.
An FTPS connection is authenticated with a user ID, password, and public key certificate (similar to how HTTPS works). Tools such as OpenSSL allow key certificates to be requested and created. When connecting to an FTPS server, an FTPS client will first verify the trustworthiness of the server's certificate.
SFTP or FTPS? In summary, SFTP and FTPS are both secure FTP protocols with strong authentication options. Since SFTP is much easier to port through firewalls, however, we believe SFTP is the clear winner between the two. Uses only port 22.
