Well, in short, a server is a device or computer program that provides a service to another computer program and its users.
Servers generally support a larger quantity of memory than most desktop computers, which may come in handy for businesses and organizations for example. Servers therefore advantageously can be used for file transfer and storage.
There are three main types of servers. They all perform the same thing, just different ways of presenting them. A server may either be:
- A physical actual computer
- A virtual version representing a physical machine
- Simply software performing server services
